The photograph and extract from the First
Edition Ordnance Survey (1868) map on the below are of the
Dare Valley Viaduct on the Dare and Aman Branch of the Vale
of Neath Railway. The viaduct was built to carry the line
over the River Dare at a point near the Cwm. The Taff Vale
Railway which was laid later also traveled below the viaduct.
Constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel the timber viaduct
was 450 feet in length and 70 feet in height. When the viaduct
was dismantled in 1947 it and the Gamlyn Viaduct near Penywaun,
were the last of the Brunel viaducts still in existence.
